Gourd, or Jícara, Hand-Carved Mezcal Small Cup Handmade by Artisans in Pinotepa de Don Luis, Oaxaca, Mexico 

In Oaxaca, the birthplace of mezcal, artisans have repurposed dried gourds and turned them into mezcal drinking vessels, or jícaras. These detailed hand-carved gourd vessels are transformed into works of art by carving them with images found in nature, mostly flora and fauna such as birds, rabbits, and flowers.

The process to make these cups starts by collecting the gourds from the calabash tree once they are ripe and hard. They are then halved and cleaned by removing the pulp and any residue. Lastly, these are sanded and carved to achieve the delicate and detailed images that characterize them, beautiful and eco-friendly pieces of art!

• Care:  Since these cups are organic in nature, they will break down if they’re left damp, so be sure to only hand wash and immediately dry after use. Also, please note that no amount of careful attention will keep these cups pristine after sustained exposure to alcohol, which eventually breaks down organic matter.
