The Story

Barro Rojo, or Red Clay Terracotta Cooking Pot Made in San Marcos Tlapazola, Oaxaca.

Indulge in the culinary traditions of Mexico with this Clay Terracotta Cooking Pot. Handmade with passion in the artisanal workshops of San Marcos Tlapazola, this cooking pot is a testament to the mastery of the all-women potters who carry on the legacy of their ancestors.

Crafted from the finest barro rojo (red clay), this unglazed and uncured pot imparts a delightfully earthy flavor to your dishes, making it perfect for preparing café de olla, frijoles, or other high-temperature delicacies. Its round lid also doubles as a convenient measuring tool for water or coffee. Embrace the rich heritage of Mexican pottery and elevate your cooking experience with this stunning and functional piece.

  • Sold individually
  • Made of locally sourced Barro Rojo, or Red Clay in San Marcos Tlapazola, a Zapotec, indigenous community in Oaxaca
  • Can be used for a variety of dishes and drinks such as beans, rice, atole, and even Café de Olla
  • Includes a convenient hollow, round bowl as a lid, the way cooks in San Marcos Tlapazola use them, which serve as a vessel to hold ingredients or as measurements for recipes! (please note that this lid will not completely seal the top of the pot)
  • Food-Safe: No dyes or glazes were used, making it lead-free.
  • Artisanal: The special color variations, gloss, and texture come from the burnishing and baking processes, all handmade artisanally, without molds or electrical ovens.
  • Red Clay is known for its resistance to high temperatures, making this the perfect cookware for open-fire cooking
  • MEASUREMENTS:

Small: Pot: 8” wide x 7” tall, 1/2 gallon capacity, Top bowl is 4” wide x 2” tall, 12 fl. oz. capacity

Large: 9” wide x 10” tall, 1.5 gallon capacity, Top bowl is 6” wide x 2.5” tall, 16 fl. oz. capacity

  • CARE: We recommend handwashing this piece to ensure the same texture for years. Let fully cool before washing. Some pieces of red clay may filter water (because no glaze or sealant was used). Emerenciana recommends cooking the piece with atole or a thick beverage and letting the piece cool before washing. Doing this several times will “cure” the piece as time and use is the best way to seal barro rojo pieces.

At Lolo - Mercadito we are committed to acknowledging the nature of each product. With each purchase, you get a unique and authentic piece handmade with love by artisans from Mexico. These are artisanal products. For this reason, there might be some flaws and variations in color, measurements, shapes, and design.
